Srinagar, Sep 08 (KNO): The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has appealed to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene in what they describe as ‘a long-standing issue of neglect’, concerning MBBS interns’ stipends in the Union Territory.
In a formal memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, a copy of which lies with news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the Association pointed out that MBBS interns in J&K currently receive a monthly stipend of only Rs 12,000, an amount they say is grossly insufficient to meet basic living expenses given the rising costs of accommodation, food, and transportation.
The students highlighted that despite continuous appeals and assurances made over the past six years, the stipend structure remains unchanged. “This has left young medical graduates disheartened, demoralized and financially burdened at a stage when they are expected to give their best in service to the people,” the memorandum reads.
Citing examples from other parts of the country, AIMSA noted that states like Bihar recently revised their MBBS interns’ stipend to Rs 27,000, while several others already provide higher stipend, recognizing the demanding role interns play in hospitals. They said that the disparity between J&K and other states creates a sense of neglect among medical students here.
“The government must ensure that stipends are enhanced at par with other states without further delay,” the students urged. They also requested the administration to explore “all possible mechanisms” to address this long-pending demand, which, if met, would boost morale and reaffirm the value of medical education in J&K.
Medical students argued that interns form the backbone of patient care in hospitals, often working long hours under challenging circumstances. “With low stipends, many are forced to rely on their families for financial support, which undermines their independence and dignity.”
The Association said that they are hopeful that the Chief Minister’s intervention will finally bring about the long-awaited change. “Your support will mean a great deal to the interns who dedicate themselves to serving the people, often under challenging conditions,” AIMSA added further—(KNO)
